Electro-Voice ND96
Supercardioid Dynamic Microphone
The EV ND96 is a stage vocal microphone with a supercardioid polar pattern. The ND96 replaces the N/D967 and it is part of EV’s ND series of microphones.
From specifications and available information, we conclude that all of the ND microphones (except from the small diaphragm condenser ND66) share a large diaphragm moving-coil cartridge, with a lightweight Mylar diaphragm. Exact measurements are unknown.
The capsule in the ND96, and all the ND dynamics, is shock mounted with a four-point suspension for durability and handling noise. It also contains a humbucking coil to combat electrical interference. The capsule is covered in a foam layer that protects against moisture.
Unique to the ND line, the ND96 has a vocal presence switch (like the N/D967’s “character switch”) that attenuates the low midrange.
The ND96 has been designed with a flat grille that gets the capsule closer to the source. It has an extremely tight supercardioid pickup that is designed to hear sources directly on-axis, a vocalist’s mouth right on the grill. EV states that the mic is designed for extremely loud stages, and reviews have borne out that vocal presence remains clear even in front of loud drums in a small stage.
The grill of the ND96 is made from EV’s “memraflex” material, which is a very rigid mesh that resists dents and damage from drops.
As the ND designation would indicate, the magnet in the ND96 is neodymium, which gives higher output and reduces physical weight.
The frequency chart for the ND96 shows an almost identical frequency response to that of the ND76. However, as previously stated, the ND96 is supercardioid, and contains a presence switch.
The ND96 is sold with a mic clip and cloth bag.
The Electro-Voice ND96 is also known as: ND-96, ND 96.
The mic was released in 2016.
